The romantic version goes like this: a Detroit radio DJ called the Electrifying Mojo played Kraftwerk on the air to a Black audience in the late seventies, and three kids in a suburb thirty miles out heard the future and built it.
That version is true. It's also doing a lot of work to avoid a shorter explanation, which is that Chicago is ninety minutes down the I-94 and had the same drum machines two years earlier.
